Producing High-Quality Durians - Fertilization During Flowering and Fruiting Stages is Key

National Durian (The World First Bilingual Durian Magazine), Issue 26 Aug 2023, Pg 58

Mr. Fan, who manages a 5-acre durian orchard in Kulim, Kedah, mentioned that around 2017 and 2018, he started planting durians as a hobby. However, none of the durian trees were thriving under natural conditions, and most of the trees exhibited dry branches and poor growth. Due to the lack of proper care and management, the durian trees were affected by wood rats, scale insects, and even blackhead disease, leading to the aforementioned branch drying issues, which severely impacted both yield and the quality he highly values. Fortunately, after encountering the TAFON company, things improved significantly. Mr Khor Kai Wen from TAFON mentioned that to meet Mr. Fan’s quality requirements, they actively controlled pests and diseases and improved the branch drying problem. During the flower induction period, they provided TAFON Blue Fertilizer 12-13-18, applied using ground methods. Additionally, they supplemented the trees with foliar fertilizers, using Black Gold Blue + Black Gold Yellow + Green Crop (micronutrients) to quickly replenish the tree’s nutrient needs.

Fertilizers to Enhance Quality
During the fruiting period, TAFON provides Red Fertilizer 12-10-22+8S Mgo and TAFON Black Gold Bamboo Charcoal Ash and Seaweed Fish Protein. These fertilizers play a crucial role in enhancing durian quality, especially regarding soil sulfate. Generally, soil organic matter is divided into two categories: fresh and partially decomposed plant and animal residues, and humus. Therefore, applying adequate humic acid can replenish the lacking humic acid in the soil, improve soil structure, enhance soil aeration and water permeability, and reduce soil acidity and alkalinity, thereby improving durian quality. Besides granular fertilizers, during the fruiting period, he also uses Black Gold Pink + Amino Power and Black Gold Purple + Black Gold Mint Green (micronutrients) to boost quality.

Mr. Fan pursues high-quality durians. During the interview, it was harvest time, and the ripe fallen fruits indeed met his high standards upon tasting. In fact, the Black Thorn trees, only 5 to 6 years old, produced durians with black-green flesh, surprising him greatly. Regardless, Mr. Fan’s orchard has 125 Black Thorn trees, accounting for about 70% of the total varieties, with Musang King making up 20%, and the remaining 10% being other varieties.

According to image above: ← Mr. Fan (right) initially started planting durians as a hobby, leading to serious branch drying issues due to lack of proper management. Fortunately, through improved fertilization and cultivation practices, he managed to turn the situation around, achieving high yields and quality in 2023. Next to him is TAFON technical staff member Mr Khor Kai Wen. Mr. Fan’s Black Thorn durians are known for their beautiful color and incredibly smooth flesh.
